Braces are orthodontic appliances that gradually realign and straighten teeth. Traditional metal braces are the most common type of braces we use at Judd Orthodontics, but ceramic braces, clear aligners, and other variations are also available.
At Judd Orthodontics, we use braces to correct bite alignment issues, including overbites, underbites, and crossbites. We also use them to straighten teeth that are crowded or misaligned, to close gaps between teeth, and to help correct misalignment caused by jaw injuries or congenital disabilities.
The Procedure for Braces in Mesa
Before getting started with your treatment, you will meet with Dr. Judd to discuss your orthodontic needs and goals. We will examine your teeth and jaw, take X-rays, and develop a treatment plan.
The braces are installed by attaching brackets to the surface of each tooth with a special adhesive and then threading wires through the brackets. We may also place rubber bands or other attachments to help move your teeth into their correct positions.
You will need to visit Dr. Judd periodically to adjust the braces. At these appointments, we will tighten the wires or replace them with new ones to continue moving the teeth into their correct positions.
Patients with braces need to maintain good oral hygiene. This includes brushing and flossing regularly and using specialized tools like interdental brushes and floss threaders to clean between the braces and teeth.
Once the teeth are properly aligned, we will remove the braces. You may need to wear a retainer to help maintain the new alignment of the teeth.
When Are Braces Used?
At Judd Orthodontics, we use braces to fix many different types of malocclusions. Malocclusion is a term used to refer to teeth that are misaligned or crooked. The most common malocclusions we treat include overbite, underbite, crossbite, and open bite.
We also recommend braces to correct other problems related to the alignment of the teeth and jaws and use brackets and wires to move the teeth into proper alignment. We bond the brackets to each tooth with a special adhesive and then secure a wire to the brackets using an elastic O-ring. The wire is held in place by small metal pieces called ligatures that hook onto the bracket. As the teeth move, we will tighten and change the wire to continue guiding the teeth into place. This continues until your teeth and jaws are in their correct positions, and your new beautiful smile is complete.
At Judd Orthodontics, we recommend braces for both children and adults. The duration of the treatment may vary depending on the severity of the corrected dental issue. We recommend you work closely with Dr. Judd and follow all instructions to ensure the best possible outcome.
